The San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge, seen from Richmond Harbor

The long-delayed replacement for the cantilever section of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge is seen with the old cantilever section behind it. The new bridge is slated to open next year. You've read «Louis'» rants about the delays in beginning construction of the new bridge before, so he won't recite the rant again. Instead, he has a new rant. The steel for the new bridge is being fabricated in China. Cal Trans engineers assigned to monitor the structural integrity of the steel have been complaining that the Chinese steel is not up to code. Cal Trans, anxious to complete the long-delayed bridge next year has been firing or reassigning the engineers who have been blowing the whistle on the inferior Chinese steel. Thus the new bridge, which was ordered after the old cantilever section broke in the October, 1989 earthquake, probably will not have any more structural integrity than the bridge it is replacing. This after the replacement section being 20 years late due to political wrangling and obstruction by "environmental groups" and some $400,000,000 in cost overruns. California, once "the Golden State', is very broken...

Nice shot. Am wondering how old the Bay Bridge is.

What a sick state of affairs. When I first heard the steel was from China I got mad, all the way on this side. How ridiculous can you get? Use china's steel then import workers from china on other projects. We sit here with high unemployment, in this delay time they could have built a steel mill!!!
I remember the rant, and it is justified!

I though construction blunders like this only happened in Canada. I guess the bright side of the bridge project is that someone is getting rich from it. Lets just home that we never have to read read about the bridge collapsing.

It is a lovely shot, Louis, construction woes notwithstanding. I love the clear blues.

Thanks for hosting.

As I'd like to take a pause with the Psalms during the months of July and August, I will try to find a bridge appropriate.

Wonderful a sight indeed this picture. Please have a good new week.
