Sunday Bridges: The Golden Gate at 75

Sunday Bridges
The Golden Gate at 75!

The Golden Gate Bridge opened 75 years ago on 27 May, 1937. Just as la tour Eiffel has become emblematic of Paris, the Golden Gate quickly became emblematic of San Francisco and the Bay Area.

On the 50th Anniversary of the Bridge, some 300,000 people walked across. The weight of this mass of people caused the center of the bridge to dip some 7 feet - 2.13 meters, and the suspension cables pulled the bridge towers in. There was no danger of the bridge collapsing as it was designed to flex like this. Nonetheless, for the 75th Anniversary festivities, the walk will not be repeated.

More than 300,000 people walked across the Golden Gate Bridge on her 50th Anniversary.

Happy Birthday GGB, truly one the most recognised structures on the entire planet. Long may it continue to serve citizens of the Bay Area.

I would love to walk across this bridge someday. I HAVE been blessed to see it.

I hope you don't ban me from your linky parties after seeing the pitiful bridge I posted today. :)
We seldom leave West Texas and not too many great bridges around our parts. I do enjoy playing in your party, tho, ...
hence the pitiful little foot bridge I am showing today.
Thanks, bj

What a wonderful story M la Vache and the image of all those people walking across is staggering..no wonder the poor old bridge had a bit of a sag!! Probably a good idea not to repeat.

Wow, some facts! I never knew 'The Bridge' could flex that MUCH! I remember watching a ship (An LST, flex in a storm) BUT this is hard to fathom. Love the GREAT night shot.

I don't blame them for hot allowing another walk across the bridge, ANYTHING can go wrong, and that would be disastrous. My skin sorta crawls thinking of that much flex!
VERY GOOD ENTRY!

Wow! I don't remember hearing about that celebratory bridge walk! The GGB certainly is emblematic of San Francisco...

Happy Birthday to the GGB. I thought she was more than 75 years old by now. She is a magnificent bridge and I've been thrilled to cross over on more than one occasion.

Happy birthday to the Golden Gate Bridge!

I just found a photo I took of the Bay Bridge in 1978 and will enter it in Sunday Bridges next week.

In NZ. they stopped a protest march because they said the bridge was flexing to much and in danger of collapsing. Some people sai it is B.S.

Before I saw a Video of construction of the Golden Gate Bridge, so I can imagine how though it is for the weight of massive people. The bridge is beautiful to see, the design of Art Deco, and joyful to acros.(I've never done unfortunately)
