L'heure bleue - IV

The Blue Hour

L'heure bleue
... the blue hour, the magic hour, the hour between daylight and night when the sky's luminosity draws artists out of their studios to see light's last echoes at night or its first echoes at dawn.
"Because French often places its modifiers after its nouns, there is a kind of poetry that English cannot, because of how it works, achieve. So, for example, there is the French expression, l'heure bleue, which refers to that often shimmering time between the hours of daylight and darkness. We say “the magic hour” for that concept. It's sort of sad to write that next to l'heure bleue. French knows what to do here. French knows that the concept of “blue” is critical; that time of soft, subtle waning is about hue. French knows that emphasis should be on the idea of blue, but also that sufficient strength is given to the idea of the hour, to l'heure. L'heure bleue sounds like subtle magic.

The gates to Le palais de la Justice. Paris. That's la Sainte-Chapelle at the top left. To the right of le palais de la Justice is la Conciergerie (not visible in this photo) where Marie Antoinette was held before being beheaded. The day was quite overcast when «Louis» took this photo, thus the poor quality of the image of the roof of the building - «Louis» was focusing on the gates anyway...

Angel Island, once the West Coast equivalent of Ellis Island. If you look closely in the foreground, you'll see the homeless encampment on Albany Point, a real sore-point with Albany residents.

The central doors of Grace (Episcopal/Anglican) Cathedral, San Francisco are replicas of the famous "Gates of Paradise" doors installed in 1452 at the baptistry of the Duomo in Florence, Italy. The originals were done by the great Florentine sculptor Lorenzo Ghiberti (1378-1455). It took Ghiberti, his son Vittorio, and the men of his workshop 27 years to complete the doors. Art historians mark this as the beginning of the Italian Renaissance.

The doors are made entirely of bronze. The sculptured portions are finished in gold.

Depicting biblican stories from the Old Testament, the scenes are shown in Tuscan settings. Ghiberti was the first of his time to make use on such a grand scale of two major innovations, graded relief and linear perspective.

Each door is 16 feet high, 4 inches thick and five feet wide. Each door weighs 2,550 pounds. Each panel is 30 inches square.

For more information about the doors, visit the Grace Cathedral website, search for "Bible in Bronze." This will give you an in-depth interactive study of the doors.
