L'heure bleue - II

Clic sur l'image pour l'agrandir
L'heure bleue, the blue hour, the magic hour, the hour between daylight and night when the sky's luminosity draws artists out of their studios to see light's last echoes at night or its first echoes at dawn.
"Because French often places its modifiers after its nouns, there is a kind of poetry that English cannot, because of how it works, achieve. So, for example, there is the French expression, l'heure bleue, which refers to that often shimmering time between the hours of daylight and darkness. We say “the magic hour” for that concept. It's sort of sad to write that next to l'heure bleue. French knows what to do here. French knows that the concept of “blue” is critical; that time of soft, subtle waning is about hue. French knows that emphasis should be on the idea of blue, but also that sufficient strength is given to the idea of the hour, to l'heure. L'heure bleue sounds like subtle magic.

As correctly guessed by Linnea, this is Saint Mary's Cathedral, San Francisco, a.k.a. "Our Lady of the Maytag" because it is shaped like the agitator of a washing machine. ;-D

This is the After (rear) Torpedo Room on the WWII submarine U.S.S. Pampanito at Pier 45 in San Francisco. Seen here are two of the four torpedo tubes in the After Torpedo Room. The bow of the submarine contains the Forward Torpedo Room which houses six torpedo tubes. Pampanito sank six Japanese ships and damaged four more in her World War II war patrols.

UPDATE:
Ol' «Louis» thought one of y'all (Texas twang slipping out here...) would guess this one!
It's part of a chain-link fence «Louis» had to stick the camera lens through trying to frame a shot he wanted of the anchor on the ship in the background. This was shot on Pier 3 at the former Naval Air Station in Alameda. The ship is part of the U.S. MARAD fleet anchored at Alameda. MARAD (Maritime Administration) is a little known part of the U.S. government that maintains a fleet of ships that are ready to leave on 48 hours notice. For example, MARAD ships took disaster relief supplies to southeast Asia when the huge tsunami hit a few years ago. The WWII-era aircraft carrier U.S.S. Hornet was behind «Louis» when he took this shot.

Un débat passionné

A heated debate

Clic sur l'image pour l'agrandir

Enticed by the potential tax revenue, a few years ago, the city of Albany drafted a measure that would allow marijuana dispensaries. Now a business, posing as a "co-op", is trying to open a marijuana dispensary in a mixed-use area of Albany, an area that also happens to have many children living in the nearby homes. The City Planning and Zoning staff recommended against the dispensary . The developers' request for the City Council to overturn Planning and Zoning's veto of the business came before the Council on Monday night.

The debate was heated. The developers of the would-be dispensary were mocking and sarcastic of residents and anyone opposed to the opening of the dispensary. Many residents are angry at the Council that the dispensary is even being considered in Albany, a community sought out by families because of its reputation of being family-friendly and its reputation (unjustified in «Louis' experience) of having schools that are among the best in the state. («Louis'» view is if these schools are among the best in the state, we've got a serious problem: Albany High School student who have worked for «Louis» can't read, write, spell or think. If these poor kids are from some of the BEST schools in the state, what on earth is happening to the poor kids in the worst schools?! SHUDDER!)

More than fifty residents, «Louis» included, spoke against the dispensary. The Council voted to table until next Tuesday the request by the developers of the dispensary to overturn the Planning and Zoning staff's recommendation against the dispensary.

OK. «Louis» will help you out here a bit. Yes, it is a Studebaker. Yes, it is a 1962 Studebaker Hawk. But what makes this Hawk special? No, it's not the flag - that's just San Francisco...The question is what specifically is THIS Studebaker Hawk?
