On their drive to the North Coast, Mme la Vache and «Louis» turned the Vachemobile onto the drive leading to Francis Ford Coppola's Coppola Winery, where Mme la Vache got this image of part of the vineyards on the Coppola estate. The winery is located in the Alexander Valley.

Especially for Leif Hagen

Leif Hagen at Eagan Daily Photo often posts about the activities of Rotary International in Eagan, so this is for you, Leif!

Mme la Vache and «Louis» were piloting the Vachemobile down Highway 1 on a recent day trip to Mendocino when they came upon this Rotary sign at Gualala on the North Coast. «Louis» said to Mme la Vache, "We've got to back the Vachemobile up! I've got to get a photo of that Rotary sign!" At first, she thought «Louis» was une vache folle for wanting a photo of a Rotary sign, but when he explained, she understood.

Rotary International does a tremendous amount of good around the world. Two of their key projects are fighting Polio and improving the water supplies in impoverished areas. Gualala is a tiny community - but Rotary is there.

So, hat's off to you, Leif, and to Rotary International!

Le dimanche des Rameaux

Palm Sunday

The palm fronds are distributed

The Gospel lesson announcing Jesus' entry into Jerusalem is read.

"All Glory Laud and Honor, to you redeemer, king!"
The author of the text of this hymn, Tehodulph of Orleans, lived from 760 to 821. The hymn tune is by Melchior Teschner, 1584-1635.

Still singing, parishioners enter the church.

The children of the parish re-create Jesus' entry into Jerusalem.

Thus begins Holy Week.

A freighter clears the bridge as a bank of springtime fog develops behind the Golden Gate.

Inspired by Bob Crowe's Thursday Arch Series, Cieldequimper's Wednesday Doorway Series and James' Weekend Reflection Series, «Louis» is launching this Sunday Bridge Series. Each Sunday, «Louis» will feature a photo of the Golden Gate Bridge. Feel free to join in with your own local bridge submissions! We'll see where (if anywhere) this goes!

Participants this Sunday include:
Carolyn - Oakland (CA-US) Daily Photo

Do the Bunny (Basket) Hop...for Children's Miracle Network

Daryl at Out and About In New York posted this Easter Bunny and basket as a benefit for the Children's Miracle Network. Pardon «Louis» for copying Daryl's text almost verbatim:
"Are you familiar with the Children's Miracle Network? I was not, until I read DS's post here at "Third-Story Window", she told me about how both JoAnn at Lakeside Musing and Sandy at You've GOTTA Read This! presented this adorable, charitable Easter basket to any of their readers who wished to participate. I, too, wanted to help because anything having to do with children and their health is important, I know I am not alone in that.

Founded in 1983 the Children's Miracle Network raises funds for more than 170 children's hospitals. The following information is from their website, and explains their mission much better than I could:

Children’s Miracle Network is a non-profit organization that raises funds for more than 170 children’s hospitals. Countless individuals, organizations and media partners unite with Children’s Miracle Network hospitals to help sick and injured kids in local communities. Donations to Children’s Miracle Network create miracles by funding medical care, research and education that saves and improves the lives of 17 million children each year.
Every child deserves the hope and healing of children’s hospitals. With the help of a Children’s Miracle Network hospital in their community, children of all ages and backgrounds can receive treatment for every imaginable disease and injury—from asthma and broken bones to cancer and heart defects. Children’s hospitals are also on the front lines of research, education and outreach programs that keep millions of kids out of the hospital each year."

This particular "hop" is sponsored by Hershey's and it works as follows:

Hershey’s is donating $10 per each blog participating in the Better Basket Blog Hop for Children’s Miracle Network up to a total of $5,000.

The Rules:
Copy and paste these rules to your blog post.

Create a blog post giving a virtual Easter Basket to another blogger – you can give as many Virtual Baskets as you want.

Link back to person who gave you an Easter Basket.

Let each person you are giving a Virtual Easter Basket know you have given them a Basket.

Leave your link at BetterBasket.info/BlogHop comment section. You can also find the official rules of this better basket blog hop, and more information about Better Basket with Hershey’s there.

Hershey’s is donating $10 per each blog participating to the Better Basket Blog Hop to Children’s Miracle Network (up to total of $5,000 by blog posts written by April 4th, 2010).
Please note that only one blog post by each blog url will count towards the donation.

I offer this basket to anyone who wishes to take it. Hop on over to Better Basket and play Easter Bunny for some most deserving children. For they are what this is all about.

Birthday Boy Bach Boogies to his Birthday!

J.S. Bach • 21 March 1685 - 28 July 1750

Statue of Bach at St. Thomas Kirche, Leipzig

That quintessential Lutheran composer, J.S. Bach was born on this day in 1685. Dr. Timothy Zerlang, Organist and Music Director at St. Mark's Lutheran Church marked the day by playing Bach's An Wasserflussen Babylon (BWV 653) as the prelude to the Chorale Mass today. The Offering Anthem was Bach's "Lord, Jesus Christ, Thou hast Prepared." The organ postlude was Aus tiefer Not ("Out of the depths I cry to you").

2éme Anniversaire!

2nd Anniversary
(Update: A bug in Blogger posted this early & «Louis la Vache» couldn't fix it. See below for further posts.)

Two years ago today, «Louis la Vache» began San Francisco Bay Daily Photo with a very camera-shake filled image of the moon. Somehow, Gerald from Hyde Daily Photo and Olivier from Evry Daily Photo found the new blog and left its very first two comments.

As is the case with so many of us in the City Daily Photo blogger community, «Louis» owes the start of San Francisco Bay Daily Photo to Eric Tenin at Paris Daily Photo. «Louis» was reading PDP in its infancy when «Louis» moved to Paris in 2005, and checks in daily, even if he doesn't comment daily.

So, 743 posts later, «Louis» thanks all of you who read San Francisco Bay Daily photo, whether you leave a comment or not and «Louis» thanks Eric for starting PDP five years ago!

Looking Southwest from Mount Diablo

Looking Southwest from the summit of Mount Diablo, above the verdant hills we get a glimpse of the southern end of San Francisco Bay. San José, at the southern tip of the Bay, is obscured by the clouds which have brought intermittent rain during the day.

Looking down the north slopes of Mount Diablo over the cities of Antioch and Pittsburg, we see a wind farm in the delta of the Sacramento and San Joaquin Rivers. These rivers feed San Francisco Bay.

Carquinez Straight

Clic sur l'image pour l'agrandir

Viewed from the summit of Mount Diablo, we are looking northwest over the Cariquinez Straight. San Francisco Bay is fed by the San Joaquin and Sacramento rivers which merge at Antioch, a few miles east of this view. The Carquinez Bridge is visible, as are ships from the Ghost Fleet. The Ghost Fleet consists mostly of WWII-era ships, mothballed in case they are needed in a future crisis. With each passing day, the ships become more outmoded. Many of them have been scraped; most of the remaining ships are slated to be scraped.

The town below the slopes of Mount Diablo is Concord. Walnut Creek, Pleasant Hill and Martinez are left-center below Mount Diablo. On the north end of the Carquinez Bridge is Vallejo with the Napa and Sonoma Valleys visible beyond.

The hills to the west are the coast range extended past Mount Tamalpais.
