Your favorite hymns, circa 1700
Dr. Timothy Zerlang, organist and director of music at St. Mark's Lutheran Church, San Francisco, give a bravura performance of "Your Favorite Hymns, circa 1700" on Sunday 24 January. Showing off St. Mark's Taylor & Boody tracker organ, Dr. Zerlang played music of J.S. Bach, Johann Pachelbel, Dietrich Buxtehude, Johann Buttstett and others.
The Taylor & Boody organ at St. Mark's is very similar in style to the one J.S. Bach played at St. Thomas Kirche, Leipzig It may be played either with the bellows powered by electricity or as they were in the time of Bach, "pedal power" where someone worked the bellows with their feet. For the first piece Dr. Zerlang played, Buxtehude's Toccata in F Major, the young woman seen here worked the bellows.
The Taylor & Boody organ is a splendid instrument. The company fabricates each piece - and even grows the trees and cures the wood used in the building of the instrument.

San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge; Cantilever section
Twenty years later, the job still isn't done. "Once upon a time," California was a state where things got done. That is no longer true. The state is paralyzed by political dysfunction. Wrangling by the mayors of Oakland at the time, "the two Browns," Jerry in Oakland and Willie in San Francisco, over the bridge added to the delay in construction and more than doubled the costs. So-called 'environmental groups' and other nay-sayers further added to the delays and costs.
The cantilever section of the bridge ends at Yerba Buena Island. Adjacent to Yerba Buena Island is the man-made Treasure Island, built for the 1939 World's Fair. After the Fair, the island became a base for Pan American's Flying Clippers to the Pacific. In World War II, the island became a Navy base. Admiral Nimitz lived there for a time.
Also visible in this image is Alcatraz Island, Angel Island, Oakland, Alameda, Emeryville and other points in the East Bay. A portion of the suspension bridge between Yerba Buena Island and San Francisco is visible in the right side of the image.

La fête de l'épiphanie

La fête de l'Épiphanie on le 6 janvier is the twelfth and last day of Christmas. The feast marks the visit of the magi to the Christ child as recorded in Matthew's Gospel. (Matthew 2:1-12) In France, l'Épiphanie is celebrated with a meal that is the rival of the Christmas feast or le réveillon of New Year's day. The traditional dessert served at le repas de l'Épiphanie is la galette des rois. La galette consists of two circles of pâte feuilletée filled with frangipane or almond-flavored crème pâtissiere - or a combination of the two.
La galette is both a pastry delight and a fun game of chance. La galette is presented at the table by the host(ess) with a crown on top. The host(ess) has hidden une fève under some portion (other than the center) of the cake. The crown is set aside and la galette is cut and served to the guests. The guest who gets the slice with la fève in it is presented with the crown to wear and thus becomes the Queen or King for the day. It's all great fun and a properly made galette des rois makes a most enjoyable dessert.
La recette est ici.
