Your favorite hymns, circa 1700

Clic sur les images pour les agrandir

Dr. Timothy Zerlang, organist and director of music at St. Mark's Lutheran Church, San Francisco, give a bravura performance of "Your Favorite Hymns, circa 1700" on Sunday 24 January. Showing off St. Mark's Taylor & Boody tracker organ, Dr. Zerlang played music of J.S. Bach, Johann Pachelbel, Dietrich Buxtehude, Johann Buttstett and others.

The Taylor & Boody organ at St. Mark's is very similar in style to the one J.S. Bach played at St. Thomas Kirche, Leipzig It may be played either with the bellows powered by electricity or as they were in the time of Bach, "pedal power" where someone worked the bellows with their feet. For the first piece Dr. Zerlang played, Buxtehude's Toccata in F Major, the young woman seen here worked the bellows.

The Taylor & Boody organ is a splendid instrument. The company fabricates each piece - and even grows the trees and cures the wood used in the building of the instrument.

Dr. Zerlang takes a bow....

...and salutes the organ.

The audience, much larger than is indicated here, had a splendid time. No event in a Lutheran church would be complete without coffee, so coffee and homemade cookies were served after the concert.

Pendillement dans la baie

Bobbing in the Bay

Clic sur l'image pour l'agrandir

Click to enlarge; in the center west of and between Albany Point and Point Isabel, you'll see a boat bobbing in the Bay. Perhaps you've noticed this boat in the many photos «Louis» has posted from this view. The boat never moves. Curious about this, «Louis» asked the owner of a local sailing school if he knew the story. The boat, «Louis», learned is lived on by someone who has found the exact place in the Bay where Alameda, San Francisco, Contra Costa and Marin Counties come together and has dropped anchor at that spot. As the boat pivots around the anchor, the owner gets away from the prohibition of any boat on the Bay staying at anchor in one spot in the Bay for more than 72 hours! Also note the outbound tanker sailing past Tiburon.

Albany Point

For many years, Albany Point was a dumping ground for construction waste. This dumping was banned in 1984. Since then, nature has slowly been reclaiming the point from the debris. The City of Albany is doing a restoration of part of the Point, as seen in the fenced off area visible in this image.

San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge; Suspension section

Clic sur l'image pour l'agrandir

Another view from the slopes of Mount Tamalpais, this time of the suspension bridge section of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge. Unlike the cantilever section seen in yesterday's post, this bridge will not be replaced. Also seen in this image is Sausalito harbor, Alcatraz Island, and (like yesterday) Yerba Buena and Treasure Islands, and Alameda (which is in itself, another island).

San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge; Cantilever section

Clic sur l'image pour l'agrandir

Seen from the slopes of Mount Tamalpais, is the cantilever section of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge. A section of this bridge collapsed in the 1989 earthquake. Although the collapsed section was repaired, the decision was made to replace the bridge.

Twenty years later, the job still isn't done. "Once upon a time," California was a state where things got done. That is no longer true. The state is paralyzed by political dysfunction. Wrangling by the mayors of Oakland at the time, "the two Browns," Jerry in Oakland and Willie in San Francisco, over the bridge added to the delay in construction and more than doubled the costs. So-called 'environmental groups' and other nay-sayers further added to the delays and costs.

The cantilever section of the bridge ends at Yerba Buena Island. Adjacent to Yerba Buena Island is the man-made Treasure Island, built for the 1939 World's Fair. After the Fair, the island became a base for Pan American's Flying Clippers to the Pacific. In World War II, the island became a Navy base. Admiral Nimitz lived there for a time.

Also visible in this image is Alcatraz Island, Angel Island, Oakland, Alameda, Emeryville and other points in the East Bay. A portion of the suspension bridge between Yerba Buena Island and San Francisco is visible in the right side of the image.

La fête de l'épiphanie

The Feast of the Epiphany

Clic sur les images pour les agrandir

St. Mark's Lutheran, San Francisco, marked the Feast of the Epiphany with a service of Lessons and Carols. The lessons were read by the Confirmation class.

The choir, accompanied by two oboes and a cello, presented an Epiphany piece from the German Baroque.

La fête de l'Épiphanie on le 6 janvier is the twelfth and last day of Christmas. The feast marks the visit of the magi to the Christ child as recorded in Matthew's Gospel. (Matthew 2:1-12) In France, l'Épiphanie is celebrated with a meal that is the rival of the Christmas feast or le réveillon of New Year's day. The traditional dessert served at le repas de l'Épiphanie is la galette des rois. La galette consists of two circles of pâte feuilletée filled with frangipane or almond-flavored crème pâtissiere - or a combination of the two.

La Galette à Chez la Vache. To the surprise of no one (except peut-être herself) Mme la Vache found le feve under her tranche de la galette.

La galette is both a pastry delight and a fun game of chance. La galette is presented at the table by the host(ess) with a crown on top. The host(ess) has hidden une fève under some portion (other than the center) of the cake. The crown is set aside and la galette is cut and served to the guests. The guest who gets the slice with la fève in it is presented with the crown to wear and thus becomes the Queen or King for the day. It's all great fun and a properly made galette des rois makes a most enjoyable dessert.

À table!
