Mendocino was a lumber town in the 19th century. Redwood trees were harvested, floated down to the Pacific, loaded onto ships and taken down the coast, often to San Francisco for construction fueled by the Gold Rush. Now the town is something of an artist colony. The Mendocino Coast has many bread and breakfast inns, popular for weekend getaways from the urban areas around San Francisco. Mendocino County is also notorious for its marijuana-fed underground economy.

Sounds like a nice place fr R&R. Artists + marijuana = creativity...
Looks like some swanky, expensive real estate! I just fear that their homeowner's policy doesn't cover "falling off the cliff into the ocean."
un panoramique magnifique, cela fait rever
I miss Mendocino and my grandparents. Such a pretty, yet expensive town.
I would assume the "underground" economy would explain the plethora of artists. Does the initiative to legalize pot have a chance of passing? I've been hearing lots of bad things about the law as currently proposed.
Hmmm… art and marijuana use seem to go hand-in-hand in lots of places. ;)
Lovely coastline and a gorgeous location for one's home.
The water sure is a pretty color! I like that bird too.
There's even the perfect creek for illegal ummm... ongoings...
I could use a weekend getaway in Mendocino.
It's a fun little burg, although most of the stuff for sale in the shops is not made locally and few local artists are represented in the galleries downtown. We always look for art by locals when we travel and there all we could find were some little clay birds made by a local woman. Charming as they were, we were sad to see most things are from China.
It is a very special place. We spent many anniversaries at the White Gate Inn B&B, and got up there to other places as often as possible at other times during the year. It is hard to make a living there. . .we met one nuclear physicist who, to live in the village, had one job at a retail store and another as a chimney sweep, just so he could continue to live in this setting. I hear CA is trying to legalize the local cash crop to help with budget woes. . .is that true?
