Carquinez Straight

Clic sur l'image pour l'agrandir

Viewed from the summit of Mount Diablo, we are looking northwest over the Cariquinez Straight. San Francisco Bay is fed by the San Joaquin and Sacramento rivers which merge at Antioch, a few miles east of this view. The Carquinez Bridge is visible, as are ships from the Ghost Fleet. The Ghost Fleet consists mostly of WWII-era ships, mothballed in case they are needed in a future crisis. With each passing day, the ships become more outmoded. Many of them have been scraped; most of the remaining ships are slated to be scraped.

The town below the slopes of Mount Diablo is Concord. Walnut Creek, Pleasant Hill and Martinez are left-center below Mount Diablo. On the north end of the Carquinez Bridge is Vallejo with the Napa and Sonoma Valleys visible beyond.

The hills to the west are the coast range extended past Mount Tamalpais.

Wonderful panorama. Too bad about the ghost ships. Lots of memories there, I'm sure.

Wonderful that you captured one perfect, fluffy cloud in the center like that. Beautiful colors too.

Beautiful. It's like you're in a hot air balloon taking the picture.

What an absolutely awesome view! And I'm amazed that there aren't a lot of high-rise buildings. I like that.

I love wide, open views like this. After living in the Southwest, I feel like I can't see anything when I go back east. This is wonderful!

Quite a breathtaking view!

I see Mt. Tam across the bay out my kitchen window and, like the Miwoks, I think it's special, almost sacred, but in a good way.

The Ghost Fleet! What you say sort of sends me chills.
