Traffic jam

At 0630 heures a car on the notoriously congested I-880 freeway cut off a gasoline tanker truck. The driver of the truck swerved, but lost control. An explosion followed. Amazingly, no one was killed. Twelve hours later, traffic was still backed up, as seen in this image Mme la Vache captured from le balcon Chez la Vache.

Fleet Week!

"Louis" continues his Fleet Week theme with this tip o' the hat to the U.S. Navy! Bonhomme Richard is one of the most famous names in U.S. Navy history. The present Bonhomme Richard is an amphibious assault ship designed "to embark, deploy and land elements of a Marine landing force in amphibious assault operations by helicopter, landing craft, amphibious vehicle or any combination of these means."

"Bonhomme Richard was uniquely designed to support assault from the sea against defended positions ashore. She is able to sail in harm's way and provide a rapid buildup of combat power ashore in the face of opposition. The United States maintains the largest and most capable amphibious force in the world. The Wasp-class are the largest amphibious ships in the world."

Bonhomme Richard was one of the Navy ships to participate in San Francisco's annual Fleet Week, which always falls near the Columbus Day holiday.

The Bay was clear and calm on Sunday morning, 12 October, waiting for the arrival of the U.S. Navy Third Fleet for the annual Fleet Week in San Francisco. Originally, the fleet was to have arrived on Saturday, but bad weather at sea forced the Navy to delay the entry to San Francisco Bay until Sunday.

Fire on Angel Island

Clic sur l'image pour l'agrandir

Angel Island appears frequently in the photos "Louis" shoots from his balcony, but never more dramatically than in this image! Angel Island is the largest of the islands in San Francisco Bay. In the 19th century, it was the West Coast version of New York's Ellis Island, receiving many thousands of immigrants.

A fire broke out on the island at 2100 heures on Sunday night, 12 October. The fire spread rapidly through the dried vegetation of the island. Before it was contained, the fire had consumed more than 300 of the 714 acres of the island. Forty campers spending the night on the island were evacuated.

The single fire engine on the island was no match for the rapidly-spreading fire. Fire crews were brought in by boat and additional fire equipment brought in by barge. As late as 1700 heures Monday, smoke was still rising from the island and hanging on the Bay.

There are several historic buildings on the island. To the best of "Louis's" knowledge, they were all spared and there were no injuries or fatalities. The fire certainly lit up the night sky around the Bay and was visible for many miles.

The story and more photos HERE. (This story quotes 100 acres as having been consumed in the fire, but later news sources quote more than 300 acres as having burned.)

Occasionally "Louis" will take you to Paris, one of his favorite places in the world. Today we visit le Métro on ligne 1 at Forum des Halles where we happen upon a group of Musicians playing Mozart. It is very common to find music being played in le Métro in Paris - and the quality of the Music is very good. Not just anyone can play. Musicians wishing to play in le Métro must audition and be granted a license to perform.

ABC Wednesday "L" - Jack London's Cabin

Clic sur l'image pour l'agrandir

"Louis" might be accused of cheating a bit with this post as he has already used Jack London in his J post. But Jack London (12 January 1876 – 22 November 1916) is important both in Bay Area history and American literature. He wrote The Call of the Wild, White Fang, and The Sea Wolf along with many other popular books. A pioneer in the then-burgeoning world of commercial magazine fiction, he was one of the first Americans to make a lucrative career exclusively from writing. Pictured today is London's cabin adjacent to Heinold's First and Last Chance Saloon at Jack London Square in the Port of Oakland.

Le lundi «Odd Shots» - Rat bird?

Pigeons are often (and justifiably) called 'winged rats,' but in "Louis's" opinion, seagulls aren't any better. It is only appropriate then that this seagull is resting on a rat cone one one of the lines of the U.S.S. Hornet at the former Naval Air Station in Alameda.
