A view of the Flight
Deck of the
U.S.S. Hornet. This deck has launched and recovered many planes of many types. These
Essex-class carriers in World War II had a top speed of 30 knots, almost 40 miles-per-hour. During flight operations, the carrier would turn into the wind and the speed of the ship would be increased to Flank speed - in other words, as fast as she could go. This provided extra lift for planes taking off. Can you imagine this 900 foot-long carrier hurling itself through the water at almost 40 miles-per-hour?
That's San Francisco you see in the background.

Powerful engines to move this big ship. This is a large ship, the superstructure on the left is dwarfed by the size of the deck.
No, Louis, I cannot begin to imagine such power or such a sight. Great ABC Wednesday post.
Fantastique! I'd love to go on a tour of this flight deck. Venez chez moi aujourd'hui. :D
Its a dandy post, Louis! Great shot of SF skyline at deck level too.
very impressive!
Very impressive. Are these ships (the original from WW2) still operative? The plane on the deck looks modern.
You posted the Deck of the Hornet; I posted a Dragonfly! We're into insects today, of sorts. I thought my dragonfly was big until I saw this "Hornet" of yours.
Nice ... and original .. I am sure no one else had a flight deck shot!
And you would be amazed at the things Husband has been able to do to his iMac ... and each time I thank the gods for Apple's Protection Plan AND my friend Carter's tech expertise
:-Daryl
That's amazing, the deck is so tall it looks like it's going to tip over and fall any second.
Yep, I've been on the Hornet -- it's pretty darned impressive! I must get back over there some day...
Well something else new I learned today.
*Flank speed*
That photo of the flight deck is awesome especially when it is enlarged.
Bear((( )))
That is very cool. It would be great to stroll on one of these decks. It's hard to imagine how huge it is and pictures and movies can only give you an idea of it....
Awesome post. More Nautical insight and history lesson to boot. azdmt
Very original use of the letter D. The flight deck is so huge. What a floating city.
Fantastic view ... and a great ship...
Looks very technical and modern! We learn so much each Wednesday.
It always amazes me to see these ships afloat. I understand displacement, but still....
Bon jour Louis la Vache! Your "D" post is both interesting and informative....thanks for the view from the flight deck!
I watched all of "Carrier" and was completey amazed. My dad was Navy and I've been on quite a few ships, and boats. But displacement and the earth revolving are two concepts that never cease to amaze me.
